Nifty iPhone Tip for Maps Users

I love stumbling across new little tricks for the iPhone 4, especially when they solve problems I've complained about in the past :)

Here's one such tip:

Use the compass with maps. Tap the Location button in Maps twice to use the built-in compass to orient the map based on the direction you are facing.

Change Isn't Slowing

Mobile_slide_intro_ss

As quickly as things have changed in the tech & online world over the past few years, many people seem to think that they just need to learn what's going on now and they'll eventually "arrive" at a place where they can rest in what they know. The truth of it though, in my opinion, is that things will continue to adapt and change at a faster pace each year.

So, you've been working hard to get your online presence in order and maybe you're even beginning to see the benefits of it in terms of income, BUT WAIT, where's everyone going?
Well, you'll want to check out this insightful post on ReadWriteWeb, about the mobile internet. Like it or not, people are becoming more and more likely to browse the web on their mobile devices, versus sitting in front of the home or office computer. What does that mean for you? It means that while you're developing your online marketing strategy, one of the VERY FIRST THINGS you must consider in today's world is how it works with the mobile web. If you build everything for computer-based browsing, you'll inevitably see your numbers dive as more and more people go mobile.

Your Clients WANT You Present in the Social Space, Whether You Realize It Or Not

I stumbled across an incredibly informative blog post by Brian Solis yesterday, outlining the importance of YOUR presence on facebook. I'm speaking to the business-owners out there, big and small, of course. If Facebook isn't a major part of your business plan, your schedule, and your budget, you better re-think things quickly.

What I found really interesting in his statistical data, though, was where Twitter fits into this picture. I already know, from experience, that people in the social space are bound and determined to do business with other people in that same space. They're some of the most loyal and level-headed clients I have. But take a look at the numbers outlining the loyalty of your Twitter followers.

You Tweet, But Who's Paying Attention?

This isn't a post to take pot shots at Twitter. I'm a Twitter advocate and know the value in the awesome networks I've built there. In fact, I would say that if you're not using Twitter, or if you've used it and said "I don't get it," you're missing out on a massive wealth of knowledge and an amazing, neverending network.

If you know what I'm talking about, do you ever wonder who your audience really is? You know who you follow, and what they're about, right? But do you know what the people who follow you are all about?

Well, thanks to some friends and brilliant minds, you will wonder no more! Tweeplecloud will give you a visual of who is following you and what their interests are.

Just sign into twitter and link Tweeplecloud and you'll get something that looks like this:

My Tweeplecloud

If you know anything about tag clouds, then you know what you're looking at. If not, basically, the larger the word, the more prominent it is. So, by looking at this, I know that "real estate" is a very big commonality among my followers. I also know that many of my followers are in marketing, media, and business, and that many of them are social, bloggers, moms, husbands, etc.

So, what does yours look like? Share it here if you can!

iPhone Camera Upgrade - HDR

YES, I'm an iPhone junkie. It's no secret, and I'm certainly no apologist.

Steve Jobs & crew recently deepened my love for this fabulous device, with the latest OS release. If you're an iPhone 4 owner and you haven't upgraded your OS yet, drop what you're doing right this minute and go update!! What, you're not sold on how big of a deal this is yet? OK, then take a look at these pics:

(download)

You see any difference? Yeah, you'd have to be blind not to see it. You see the original shot, and the improved shot, all done AUTOMATICALLY by the iPhone. That's right, there's no photoshopping done on any of these.

With the new OS, you have an 'HDR' option. The short of it is that now your camera will (with HDR turned on) snap 3 versions of whatever you're shooting, one regular, one over-exposed, and one under-exposed. It then takes the best, clearest elements from the 3 shots and combines them into one picture, giving you more clarity in backgrounds, foregrounds, and the tiny details.

If you're a picture-snapping nut like I am, this little OS improvement will change your world... ENJOY!

How To Change Your Twitter Name Without Losing Your Followers

A few months ago, I decided to go ahead and do something I'd be contemplating for a while. It's something that most people are afraid to do, and most of the 'experts' will tell you NOT to do. Yep, I changed my twitter name. The reasons why I did it could be an entirely separate blog post, so maybe later, but for now, let's just talk about how I did it without losing my followers, or having to ask them all to follow me at a different name, and without losing my original twitter name.

First thing I had to do is set up a second twitter account (let's call this one 'account 'B') with a different email address. That's easy enough, right? Just set it up using any twitter name you want... doesn't really matter at this point.

Secondly, log out and then log into your original twitter account (let's call that 'account A'). This is the account that all of your followers are following now.
Click on the 'Settings' at the top of the page and then change your 'Username' to whatever your desired new twitter name is.

Now, log out of account A and log into account B (the new account you set up earlier). Click on the 'Settings' at the top of the page and change your 'Username' to your old (original) twitter name.

Now you have your new twitter username in place with all of your original followers, and you've reserved your original twitter name so that nobody else can grab it and pretend to be you.

I would suggest that you DON'T change your avatar (your picture) right now. Many of your followers won't recognize your new twitter name, but will likely still recognize your avatar and begin to associate your new twitter name with you. You might even tweet an announcement of the change that you just made, just to help everyone realize that it's still you.

That's it... it's THAT simple... if you need help, just let me know.

Update Your Status the SAFE Way - By Voice!

If there's one thing that drives me nuts, it's watching someone text while they drive down the road. I'm not blameless here either... sometimes I need to quickly reply to a message and, while I usually pull over to do so, or wait until I'm at a stoplight, it's not ALWAYS possible, right? What if you're on the highway?

So, that's where the Dragon Dictation iPhone app comes in (free at the time of this post). I've used this for a while, and it's amazingly accurate. Simply press the record button, talk into it and it transcribes your voice to text.

Here's the cool thing, though. They just released some INCREDIBLE improvements to this app yesterday. In 'the old days' you had to copy the text from the app, then paste it into your text or mail client. Kind of a pain really, but now that's changed. All you have to do now is tap the text or email button and the text is already there in your message when the text or email application opens. EVEN BETTER, they added Twitter and Facebook functionality to the app, so you can tweet your tweeps and update your facebook friends just as easily!!

Yep, it's that simple, and free, and oh-so-cool to be able to keep in touch by voice, instead of endangering everyone around you!

Do Your Facebook Fans See What You Think They See?

Seems like a silly question, right?

I've found though, that most people don't know there are certain default settings within Facebook that may limit how your page is displayed to visitors.

For example, one setting you may want to consider is the feed settings for your wall. By default, the wall on your 'Like' page will only display things that YOU, the admin, post. So, if one of your friends or fans shares something on your wall (a new post, not a comment), it won't show up to everyone else automatically.

Now, of course, not everyone wants the same things displayed on their page, so you have to ask yourself which settings fit your own strategic plan.

Personally, I believe the whole purpose of social media is to be social. Let go of the control! Limiting the posts on your wall to only your content doesn't allow your friends/fans to truly engage with you, so I changed this setting, so that my fans' posts show up right in line with my own. It's a simple fix, and here's how to do it:

When you're looking at your wall, you'll see an 'Options' button, just below the 'Share' button:

Fb_screen1

Click on that link and then you'll see a few options appear:

Fb_screen2

The arrow indicates the option I chose, which displays my posts and my fans' posts. You can choose this one or an option which will only show your posts, or only your fans' posts.

So, I guess the question is, who do you want contributing to your pages' wall?
